Cultural Heritage Artisanship & Craftsmanship Workshops

The workshops run by Għaqda Festa Esterna Madonna Ta’ Lourdes San Ġwann (VO/1980) are the practical heart of our heritage work. They take place through the year in our working premises and are open to residents of San Ġwann and surrounding Maltese localities free of charge. Each discipline pairs an experienced member with a small group of apprentices so that skills transfer by hand and by example, not by lecture. Enrolment enquiries are handled by our committee at info@madonnalourdesmalta.org.

Woodworking & Structural Carpentry

Apprentices learn to measure, joint, plane and finish the timber pedestals, arches and framework used along our processional routes. Sessions cover tool safety, load-bearing principles, timber selection suited to the Maltese climate, and the restoration of century-old pieces held in our stores rather than their replacement.

Traditional Street Lighting Design

Participants study the geometry and rhythm of Maltese festive illumination — how a street is read at night, how spacing and height create depth, and how classical motifs are reproduced faithfully. Designs are drafted on paper, prototyped at scale, then installed under the supervision of experienced members.

Event Electrical Engineering

Under qualified supervision, volunteers learn safe low-voltage distribution, cable management, load calculation, residual-current protection and the inspection routines required before any public installation is energised. No participant works unsupervised, and every installation is signed off before public access.

Banner Tailoring & Textile Restoration

Our textile group teaches pattern-cutting, hemming, appliqué, embroidery and the careful cleaning and repair of historic banners and drapery. Older members pass on stitching techniques that exist nowhere in written form, ensuring the craft survives another generation.

Youth Leadership & Community Volunteering Programs

Young Maltese citizens who join Għaqda Festa Esterna Madonna Ta’ Lourdes San Ġwann do not sit on the sidelines. Under VO/1980 supervision, and within the safeguarding rules adopted by our committee, they are trusted with genuine responsibility and mentored through it. A volunteer who joins at sixteen carrying equipment may, within a few seasons, be coordinating a work team, managing a supplier relationship, and presenting a report to the committee.

Every young volunteer is registered with the organisation, assigned a mentor, and briefed on conduct, safety and the standards expected of anyone acting in the name of Għaqda Festa Esterna Madonna Ta’ Lourdes San Ġwann. Participation records are kept at our registered office, Villa Bighi, Dawret Fra Giovanni Bichi, Il-Kalkara, Kalkara KKR 1320, Malta, and a written record of a volunteer's contribution can be issued on request to info@madonnalourdesmalta.org — useful for education, employment and further training applications.

  • Project management

Young members are assigned real responsibilities — a budget line, a delivery schedule, a work team — and report progress to the committee. They learn planning, delegation, procurement, and honest accounting of what was spent and why.

  • Public safety & crowd awareness

Volunteers are briefed on crowd flow, emergency access routes, first-aid points, fire precautions and cooperation with the local council, police and civil protection services before every public activity.

  • Event logistics & operations

From transport and storage to setup rotas, equipment inventories and dismantling schedules, participants take an activity from empty street to finished celebration and back again.

  • Communications & digital media

Members maintain photographic records, draft announcements, and publish updates through the organisation's official channels on madonnalourdesmalta.org, always under committee approval and in the organisation's registered name.

Supervision & safeguarding

Activities involving minors run only with the written consent of a parent or guardian and in the presence of designated adult members. Concerns may be raised directly and confidentially with the committee at info@madonnalourdesmalta.org or on +35623602300.

Section 3

Intergenerational Social Inclusion

A community is only as strong as the ties between its oldest and youngest members. Għaqda Festa Esterna Madonna Ta’ Lourdes San Ġwann (VO/1980) organises a steady calendar of gatherings designed so that nobody in San Ġwann spends the year unseen.

Community social evenings

Regular open evenings, band nights and shared meals where members, families and neighbours meet without ticketing or cost barriers. Transport is arranged for residents who would otherwise be unable to attend.

Senior outreach & companionship

Volunteers make seasonal visits to elderly and housebound residents, deliver festive parcels, help with small practical tasks, and record the traditions and memories our older members carry so they are not lost.

Family & children's activities

Craft afternoons, heritage walks and children's participation in decoration work give families a shared purpose and introduce the youngest residents to their own local history.
